A card the computer keeps offering to format. A pocket external that clicks and never mounts. A stick snapped off at its connector. A RAID set in a Reading office, one member down. A Mac sitting on the flashing folder. In every one of those the files are usually still there on the media. The look costs nothing, then one fixed figure comes in writing — £250 + VAT for a card or a stick, £300 + VAT for a single drive, from £500 + VAT for RAID, NAS and servers — and on most jobs nothing is charged when the data does not come back.

A head stack from a matched donor was fitted. Imaging covered the good surface either side of the scored band, and the photo library was reassembled out of that image rather than off the disk.
Nothing was run against the array until every disk had come out and been copied. The set was then reassembled in software from those copies, and the shared folders opened just as the office remembered them.
The card was imaged before any software touched it. The directory was repaired on that copy, and every frame carved back at full size.
Behind a write blocker, the recorder's disk was copied. Decoding the manufacturer's own video format against the time codes produced the hour the insurer wanted, and that hour went back as a file of its own.
Evidence & insurance work
Most jobs are over once the files go back. A few are not: an insurance claim, a tribunal, a dispute between an employer and someone who has left. Evidence handling starts at the parcel for work like that — a write blocker on every copy, hashes verified, an exhibit reference issued, and each step written down as it happens. Whatever could not be read is logged too, with the reason.
Machines, disks and cards are imaged before examination, and the examination runs on the image with the method logged as it goes. Civil reports follow CPR Part 35. Solicitors, insurers, employers and private clients instruct this work, which starts at £800 + VAT — and you must hold the authority to have the device examined.
Clips gone from the menu, or sealed inside a recorder that will not start. Overwriting is what you are racing, and how soon it comes round again depends on the recorder and its settings, so ring sooner rather than later. The disk gets indexed against its time codes and the window you need is exported. Recorder work is £400 + VAT.

It travels to the intake lab by tracked, insured post. There is no collection round and no counter in Reading, and the journey home is paid for by us.
An engineer finds the fault and works out how much can honestly be read back off the device. That stage is not charged for, and you owe nothing if you stop there.
Nothing chargeable starts until that number is in front of you, with the findings beside it.
Recovered data leaves here on new media, posted back at our cost. We keep the case open until you have checked every file.
